Duo, Oranges is another still life I made during early grad school. The tension of object and space relationships in my paintings is based on the juxtaposition of static and mobile energies. The relationships between objects often seem to bear psychological weight. A pear pressed up against the side of a bowl seeking escape from a confining structure; an orange spinning inwards into a cup’s void trying to achieve a sense of freedom, or safety. An interest too in trying to organize negative space – to make the oranges and their surroundings on an equal playing field, both contributing in significant ways to the overall piece.
|In painting still lives, I am painting relationships. Fraught, volatile, awkward, or joyful, my objects become characters in their narrative.|
